1937 Alfred Downs joined the Wanganui/Rangitikei Electric Power Board as a trainee Linesman. Alf continued working for the WREPB for fourteen years installing the first power services in the area. Whilst there he met Alan Dawson, electrical trouble man and together they formed a new business of Dawson & Downs Limited with Alf starting an adult apprenticeship to become a qualified electrician. Unfortunately the partnership was short lived. Alf completed his apprenticeship under Bill Winstanley who was a retired Electrical Inspector.
1953 Alf founded his own company Alf Downs Limited. 1st April.
1960 Alf’s son Kelvin joined the company as an apprentice electrician.
1970 Kelvin became a partner in the business and the ‘& Son’ was added to the company name.
1976 Robert Gunn joined the firm as an apprentice electrician serving under both Kelvin and Alf.
1980 Alf retired and Kelvin Downs took over the management of the company.
1994 Robert Gunn became a partner in the business.
1995 Ash Williamson joined the company from the UK to run street lighting business.
1999 Alf Downs Street Lighting Limited Formed as a standalone company.
2001 Kelvin retired and Robert Gunn became the Managing Director.
2003 Company celebrates fifty years in business.
2005 ADS Lines Limited & Alf Downs Appliances established.
2006 Aaron Reade Joined the company
2010 Aaron becomes a Director of ADS Lines Ltd & Alf Downs Street Lighting
2011 ADG Mechanical Limited established.
2012 Downs Environmental established.
2013 Company celebrates sixty years in business
2019 66 years in business!
